It was recently announced that all the calls to a 24-hour gambling help line are bigger with 5% than the last year while it is with 19 % bigger than the last 2 years. Also the Altamonte Springs-based Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling wants to see the percentage growing up.
The executive director of the council, Pat Fowler affirmed that “‘As a result of the expansion of gambling in the state and the additional gambling opportunities and venues that will be available in the future, we would expect the number of individuals seeking help to continue to rise”.
From those callers, there were around 11% business owners. The majority of them said they turned to gambling to try making ends meet, this was due to the bad economy.
He also added that “The number of unemployed callers seeking help has doubled during the past 2 years to 16 %”. The callers have reported an average debt of around 60,000 dollars because of gambling and 11 is supposed to have been resorted to bankruptcy.”
