France announced plans to open up their online gambling market.

75% of the gambling sites in France are considered illegal. France is bringing in a ton of money, but still missing out on a lot of it.

France’s new proposal is to let their citizens play at whatever gambling sites they wish, but to tax them on their play. The new plan is to take a 7.5% tax on sports bets or horse bets, and a 2% tax on poker bets. This should bring in billions of Euros in additional revenue, and will also make France’s gamblers happier.

The proposal is set to go before the cabinet at the end of the month, and everyone expects that it will go through. There has been pressure from the European Union on France to open up their gambling market, and we expect that pressure will be enough for the cabinet to quickly hustle the proposal through, and get it into action for 2010.
