Archeologists were the first ones to find evidence of gambling behaviors in actual cavemen when they recovered dice-like objects that dated back over 41000 years ago that were made up animal bones. They also found cave paintings that depicted our ancestors performing gambling like behaviors. They even found pairs of dice that dated back to the Roman Empire. In fact during a period in Roman times it was required for parents to have their kids learn how to gamble. If this law were passed during modern times parents would be at an uproar over it, so in this aspect The roman empire was very liberal. In fact it was purported that ancient Roman soldiers actually gambled for the robes of Jesus.
Evidence of gambling was even found over 4000 years ago in the chinese culture. Their game of chance was developed by using actual riles. The ancient Greeks were the most perplexing when it came to their gambling behaviors. Although Greek soldiers loved to gamble with dice games, Greek society for some reason made gambling illegal. For a very liberal society as the Greeks this behavior always puzzled me.
As far as American gambling history the first gambling establishments back in early American times were called saloons. These saloons were not only important as hot gambling spots but they were a great place where weary travelers coming from all over the country could meet and make friends. In essence these saloons had started to become social areas where people could make long lasting bonds and associations for life. During the early part of the 20th century the American government for some reason felt that gambling should be banned so they made it so by passing a series of laws. In 1931 however, the government decided to make a compromise on this by making gambling legal in 2 states: Nevada and New Jersey. This is how these 2 states became famous gambling hubs with Atlantic City and Las Vegas leading the way.

The American Roulette wheel has 38 slots in it. First, there are the numbers one through thirty-six. Finally, there are the 0 and 00 slots. American Roulette has a 5.26% house advantage over the player.

European Roulette

The European Roulette wheel has 37 slots in it. Like the American wheel, there are the numbers one through thirty-six. The European wheel also has a single 0 slot. The lack of the 00 slot makes the European version better to play. The house advantage drops down to 2.70%. There have been many systems devised for Roulette. The origins of these systems were really devised for the European version of the game.

Betting Types

Following are some common types of betting in Roulette. If you are playing in a live game and have any trouble, just ask the dealer. He or she will be happy to assist you.

Column Bet: The column bet is on the outside of the Roulette layout. It pays 2-1.

Dozens: Players can bet on the first, second or third set of 12 numbers. It pays 2-1.

Low or High: This bet pays even money. Players can bet on the winning number being 1-18 or 19-36.

Odd or Even: Another even money bet. Players bet on the winning number being odd or even.

Before settling down on a site, one should spend some time trying to understand the terms and conditions and the kind of playing experience that’s offered by each online casino gambling sites. Getting started with online casino gambling involves comparing factors such as the sign-up bonus, loyalty club, and online support. Each online gambling casino has a written code of conduct for ensuring acceptable standards of behavior. Individuals are expected to assume responsibility for their actions. One should be aware of the procedures to be followed in the case of dispute resolution. These things are of particular significance for those who wish to bet large amounts. Such gamblers need the assurance of fair-play and ease of play.

The games at online casinos are available for download on one’s PC. Some software can take up around 50 MB of space on the hard drive, so make sure you have enough space to download it. Once downloaded, the software can be installed pretty smoothly. Clicking the casino website icon takes the player to the casino where one can start playing, either for “Real Money” or “Play Money”. A beginner should compare the relation between winnings and difficulty levels while visiting different sites. This can be done by playing games on the no-download casino software; where one can even play for free.

Online casinos offer varying amounts of bonuses that players can either cash out or use for gambling. Bonuses are enticing incentives for players to play big and they often lead to handsome earnings. There are some online casinos that offer really big bonuses meant to draw the interest of the heavy betters. In order to qualify for the bonus, gamblers need to play online for a certain amount of time and the bonus may be restricted only to certain games such as slots while other games like roulette, craps, baccarat, and blackjack may not qualify for play with bonus money.

Tournament Limits

The only difference between Fixed Limit, No Limit and Pot Limit is the amount you can bet or raise when it is a players turn to act. In Fixed Limit, the amount you can bet is determined by the limits and the current betting round.

The rules for the amount a player can bet in No Limit is determined by the size of the blinds, the amount of chips bet by previous players in the current betting round, and the amount of chips the players has left.

In Pot Limit, the rules for determining the amount a player can bet are determined similarly to No Limit, except that there is a limit on the maximum bet determined by the size of the pot and the action in the current betting round.

FIXED LIMIT BET RULES

Maximum bet/raise

In limit games, the maximum bet or raise a player can make in the first and second betting rounds is equal to the amount of the low limit of the table (eg, in a $1/$2 limit game, the bet players can make in rounds 1 and 3 is $1). In the third and fourth betting rounds, players can bet the value of the high limit (eg. In a $1/$2 limit game, players can bet $2 in the third and fourth rounds.

Minimum bet/raise

The minimum bet or raise a player can make is equal to the largest previous raise in the current betting round. If no bets have been made, then the minimum bet or raise is equal to the size of the big blind.

NO LIMIT BETTING RULES

Maximum bet / raise

The maximum bet or raise a player can make is an “all-in” bet. At any point when it is the player’s turn to act, he can bet all the chips he has at the table.

Minimum bet / raise

At the beginning of each betting round, the minimum bet allowed is reset and starts at the size of the big blind.

The Minimum bet or raise a player can make is equal to the largest previous raise in the current betting round. If no bets have been made, then the minimum bet or raise is equal to the size of the big blind.

Under raises (all-in bets)

If a player does not have enough chips to make the minimum raise, but has more than it would cost to call, the player still has the option to make a raise by going “all-in”.

POT LIMIT BETTING RULES

Maximum bet / raise

The maximum bet or raise allowed in Pot Limit is equal to the amount of chips in the pot so far in the current hand. The calculation of the maximum raise allowed by a player includes the amount that the player must call before he raises.

How much can you afford to pay for your chipset and how many players will be using the chips in a game. As with most things, you pay for quality and the best advice is to buy the highest quality you can afford. It is rare to be sorry that you opted for a higher line of goods so buy the best your budget allows.

A good rule of thumb for quantity follows:

3-4 Players 300 chipset is usually enough

4-6 Players 400-500 chipset will suffice

6-8 Players 500-650 chipset is required

8-10+ Players 1000+ chips depending on numbers

The above guide is a suggested number only. Remember that you cannot really have too many chips, only too few so buy all you can afford. Many chip sellers maintain an open stock of chips so you can purchase more as you need them.

Buying a quality set of Poker chips isn’t cheap but if you’re buying a full set of chips (300, 500 or 1,000), the price typically includes an aluminum carrying case, one or two decks of cards, five dice, and sometimes a dealer button. At online stores, a set of 300 11.5-gram composite, two-color chips goes for $75 or more, depending on the style. A similar set of 300 real clay chips will cost about $25 to $30 more.

Then after the 1999-00 season, Rod Thorn took over a Nets team that desperately needed someone with his professionalism and player evaluation skills. Rod Thorn’s first major move was to select Kenyon Martin as the number one pick in the draft. While Martin suffered through an injury-plagued first season, by his second season he was a major defensive presence and a huge part of their running offense.

In 1984, Rod Thorn made what was clearly his best draft pick while GM of the Bulls, selecting Michael Jordan. However, in 2001, after having one full season to evaluate the Nets’ needs, Rod Thorn had what would have to be considered the best off-season of his career. The Nets drafted Eddie Griffin and then turned around and dealt him for three picks which they turned into Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins, and Brandon Armstrong.

Richard Jefferson turned into one of the Nets’ brightest stars. A great athlete who plays outstanding defense, Jefferson is also one of the league’s most efficient scorers, getting 19.5 points on fewer than 13 shots a night. Jason Collins doesn’t wow you if you look at the stat sheet, but he does so many little things when he is on the court, he is well respected by his teammates and considered a winner throughout the league. Brandon Armstrong, a reported sharp-shooter who can’t shoot, offered less of an impact.

But it was Thorn’s trade that off-season that really turned things around. Thorn traded talented but selfish potential superstar Stephon Marbury for an older Jason Kidd. Kidd instantly energized the franchise, guaranteeing a winning record the year he joined the franchise. Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles, and Keith Van Horn immediately improved their game and Jefferson and Collins’ NBA initiation couldn’t have gone smoother with Jason Kidd leading the charge. The reenergized franchise made it to the NBA Finals in both 2002 and 2003, ultimately losing to more talented Western Conference foes (Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs).

Thorn made a couple of errors along the way in his quest to find a bona fide center. He traded Keith Van Horn for a miscast Dikeme Mutombo, who never fit in with the Nets running style, and then signed Alonzo Mourning to a terrible 4-year, 20-million-dollar contract only to see him miss most of the season due to his kidney ailment. However, the Nets look like they have finally found their center in Nenad Krstic whom they drafted in 2002 and stashed in Europe for a couple of years to develop his game. Krstic has become an offensive force for the current Nets, averaging 13.5 points per game on a better than 50% FG percentage.

Thorn also saved the Nets’ organization when they were in danger of sliding back into the abyss. Faced with demands from ownership to cut costs, Thorn shipped off Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles, and Lucious Harris. Fans were outraged, but Denver is now stuck with Martin’s bloated contract, and Kerry Kittles is semi-retired after playing only 11 games last year. Thorn made the correct choice in Richard Jefferson over Kenyon Martin, and then made another great move by stealing Vince Carter from Toronto for the incredible bargain price of Eric Williams, Aaron Williams, Alonzo Mourning (who refused to suit up for Toronto), and a couple of harmless draft picks.

Edward O. Thorp, one of the original Blackjack Hall of Fame members, was a mathematician and scholar, known as the Father of Card Counting by professional players and the general populous alike. His Ten Count system was first introduced to the world in his 1962 book, “Beat the Dealer”, which was the very first winning blackjack system ever published, not to mention that it was also the first mathematician publication to beat any casino-style gambling game. Every card counting system available today is a derivative of Thorp’s Ten Count system.

Ken Uston, an original inductee, passed away in 1987, years before the Blackjack Hall of Fame was even a thought. Uston brought the secrets of the big card counting teams mainstream with his book, “The Big Player”, creating a commotion throughout the gaming industry. After his landmark publication, card counting teams began to generate across the globe.

The inventor of blackjacks’ “team play” is one of the original members of the Hall of Fame- Al Francesca. Francesca was the driving force and mastermind behind Ken Uston and his book, “The Big Player”.

Blackjack researchers have been using the mathematical methods of Peter Griffin, as he was the first to break down any card counting system into two points-the Betting Correlation (BC) and the Playing Efficiency (PE). His book, “The Theory of Blackjack”, along with his many other mathematical papers made him an easy pick for the original Blackjack Hall of Fame lineup.

Stanford Wong, often referred to as the “Godfather of Blackjack”, was an original inductee into the Hall of Fame. The term “wonging” is related to his proven techniques of card counting across the globe. Wong was one of the first to beat the continuous shuffle machines of Las Vegas before they were removed and updated.

Yet another original member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame, Arnold Snyder, was inducted for first to publish what is now common knowledge amongst professional blackjack players; the importance of penetration. Although he has written many publications on the topic of blackjack, Snyder refrains from publishing much of what he has learned to allow current players the opportunities to play and win.

While still in college, Tommy Hyland began playing professional blackjack, and has been for over 25 years. He is the leading man in the longest running and most successful blackjack team in the entire world. Adored by his peers and despised by casino owners, Tommy has made his mark in the blackjack world and is an original inductee into the Hall of Fame.

2004 and the Blackjack Ball brought Keith Taft to the Hall of Fame, complete with a photo album featuring a variety of gadgets and such that he invented to aid in the casino beating process, with his primary focus always on blackjack. Taft credits his son, Marty, for the two were an unbeatable team since Marty was a teenager.

Max Rubin is the author of “Comp City”, a publication aimed at beating the Blackjack tables of Las Vegas even without mastering the art of counting cards. Rubin is the other Hall of Fame’s inductee for 2004.

The 2005 Blackjack Ball brought with it two new inductees into the Blackjack Hall of Fame, one being Julian Brown, an IBM computer programmer became captivated with the mathematics involved in blackjack. In the 1960’s Brown wrote to Edward O. Thorp and requested a copy of the blackjack computer program. Since Brown had access to some of the fastest computers available, he worked diligently to produce an improved program, resulting in the creation of Hi-Opt blackjack and Hi-Lo strategies. Most of today’s blackjack experts have built upon the work of Julian Brown.
