U.K. Footballers Charged In Betting Scandal

The U.K. Football Association announced that it has charged five League Two players with breaching the organization’s betting rules. The organization alleges that all five players bet on matches they either participated in or had direct influence over.

The organization said that footballers Jay Harris, David Mannix, Robert Williams, Peter Cavanagh and Andrew Mangan bet on an end-of-season match between Accrington Stanley and Bury, which took place May 3, 2008. Harris, Mannix, Williams and Cavanagh are members of Accrington Stanley’s squad, and Mangan is a member of Bury’s squad. Harris and Cavanagh played in the match.

Cavanagh bet 5 GBP on an accumulator, the organization said: “Accrington Stanley are aware that two of our players have been charged by the Football Association in connection with betting on football matches,” the club said in a statement released after the FA’s announcement. “They have until later to this month to respond to the charges and we will await (sic) until the Football Association reach a final verdict before any action is taken by the club.”

All five players have until April 23, 2009, to answer the FA’s charges.
